DYEING CLASS: Faux Batik Technique Workshop

The Indonesian island of Java has a rich history of batik - a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to cloth, creating highly patterned and colorful fabric. Join artist and maker Robert Mahar in learning about this Javanese craft and then reimagine it utilizing a playful DIY method to create a beautiful custom throw pillow cover for your home. While paying homage to customary methods, this project will focus on a non-traditional method replacing wax resist with an unexpected material.  Instruction will explore traditional designs, but presents participants with the opportunity to create their own patterning, placement and color palette. Beginner friendly - no previous experience necessary!

All materials (fabric paint, dye resist, practice fabric, blank pillow case and brushes) are provided and included in the cost of the class. (Please note that pillow inserts will not be included in the materials kit.) Students are encouraged to wear clothing that can potentially be stained or bring a protective apron to wear.
